You're never too old to try something new. 80+ years young member learns to swim
It's January, the month of resolutions. The month of pushing limits, stepping out of our comfort zones, and confronting old habits and fears.
At the Holland Aquatic Center, our staff is fortunate enough to be able to meet people who challenge themselves to meet new goals on a regular basis. Recently, one of our members, Martin VanStaalduinen, inspired us to start 2016 with determination.
A year ago, Martin did not know how to swim. He could not make it across the pool without flotation, fins, or assistance. Regardless, he decided it was time to teach himself how to swim.
His neighbor, Kin Nguyen, cheered him on and provided instruction and assistance. In addition, Martin said the HCAC staff "has been fantastic and very encouraging".
On January 12th, 2016, Martin achieved a major goal in his journey: swimming 25 yards completely unassisted. Way to go, Martin!

HCAC Welcomes Benjamin's Hope!

Holland Community Aquatic Center is excited to partner with Benjamin's Hope to offer swimming instruction and recreational activities for those with special needs! We welcomed our first group for swim instruction last Monday and the team had a lot of fun splashing around! The group from Ben’s Hope will be returning to HCAC each Monday’s from 12-12:30 p.m. for swim instruction from September 28 through November 16 - a total of 8 lessons. Lessons will take place in the HCAC Instructional Pool.
There are about 10 residents participating in this Ben’s Hope group, along with 3-5 aides and 3 HCAC swim instructors to provide for safety and a positive experience.
Our experienced HCAC instructors, Chuck, Brittany, and Jodi are excited to work with the Ben's Hope residents to improve swimming and motor skills, while they enjoy the aquatic environment. Each lesson will be followed by some open recreation time for the group.
This special collaboration was made possible by a generous donation from the Slenk Family Estate and we hope this to be the beginning of ongoing programming offered for those with special needs.
"The Ben’s Hope
residents are by far the most energetic and excited group we’ve ever had!
If the first lesson is any indication, I think this could become an ongoing
program!" said HCAC Instruction and Community Manager, Morgan Haskell.
